Peace Tree Brewing Rye Porter

Peace Tree Rye Porter
Peace Tree Rye Porter

Tonight I had the third bottled Peace Tree beer, the Rye Porter.

It was a nice chocolatey porter, and had a crisp flavor.  It was clean on front of tongue, as it hits the back of the tongue, the Belgian-ness character (from the yeast) shows up.  After the finish, it leaves a nice chocolate flavor with a bit of the Belgian character staying with you.  It was a nice, smooth, crisp porter.

Of the three Peace Tree bottled beers, including Red Rambler and Hop Wrangler IPA, the Rye Porter is my favorite!

Have you tried the Rye Porter?  What did you think?  What’s your favorite Peace Tree offering?

Craft Beer Week is May 17-23

American Craft Beer Week is May 17-23, 2010.  So this week, when you have a beer, enjoy one from one of America’s craft brewers!

Some of the Iowa brewers to enjoy this week (and some of my favorites):

Enjoy Craft Beer Week!

Peace Tree Brewing Red Rambler

I had a chance to have Peace Tree Brewing Red Rambler.  It is named because the brewery is located in an old car dealership.

The aroma was sweet, and it had a nice reddish color.  It was a nice malty red.  It had a nice fruitiness, and was balanced by three different hops varieties.  It left a lingering malt flavor that was very nice.

Have you tried the Red Rambler?

Hop Wrangler 3

Peace Tree Brewing made it to Iowa City!

I was able to try Hop Wrangler 3 in the bottle. It is an IPA with Belgian, English, and American malts, and  English and American hops added at 6 different times.  A Belgian yeast is used, and leaves a lot of nice sweet esters.

The aroma is very hoppy with a bit of a sweet smell.  The taste has a strong hop flavor balanced with just enough malt.  There is a fluffy white head that stayed the whole glass.  It also had a nice finish.  It was a great IPA, and I look forward to more from Peace Tree!

The New Era Starts at Midnight!

Since the passage of Iowa SF 2088, we have been anxiously waiting for several higher alcohol beers to begin appearing on store shelves.  We just found out the wait is over!

Starting tonight at midnight, John’s Grocery will begin selling several higher alcohol Bell’s Brewery, Inc. offerings, including Third Coast Old Ale Barley Wine, Expedition Stout, Two Hearted Ale, Hop Slam and Consecrator Doppelbock.  Although Bell’s Brewery’s sub-6% options have been available in Iowa, this is the first time Bell’s Brewery’s high alcohol beers have been available since the highly publicized disagreement between Larry Bell, president of Bell’s Brewery, and the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.  John’s Grocery will also be selling beer from Iowa’s own Peace Tree Brewing: Hop Wrangler and Rye Porter.

John’s Grocery will have a tasting of these beers from midnight to 2 am, with limited quantities available for purchase.  Hope to see you there!
